Students from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) have enjoyed the opportunity to work on Theatr Cymru, Yr Egin and Arad Goch’s production, Dosbarth Miss Prydderch a Lleidr y Lleisiau.
As part of the production's partnership with Yr Egin, students at the University have been offered the opportunity to apply for roles within the show – an exciting opportunity for those successful to gain practical experience as part of a technical team and stage crew on a professional Welsh-language theatre production touring to venues across Wales.
We’re delighted to welcome Ashling Ryan as Production Assistant (Props), Nicole Evans as Shadow Director and Alice Pearson as Technical Support and Stage Crew. All three will work alongside the creative team and stage management to ensure that each performance is delivered successfully.
But some students have been working on the production for even longer. The University's Set Design and Production students were responsible for creating and painting the set for this new show. Working to industry-level standards and deadlines, the initiative provided invaluable real-world experience, closely reflecting the expectations and pace of professional theatre environments, and also working from the designs of Set Designer, Cai Dyfan.
Ashling Ryan was involved in the set creation project and has also accepted a role as part of the production crew where she will help prepare, arrange and look after props during production. She said:
"It's been great to have the opportunity to see the set go from unpainted flats in the workshop to a finished set on stage. This opportunity has helped me build my portfolio and I look forward to continuing to work on this production. Throughout my time at UWTSD I have discovered a passion for working backstage and this opportunity will allow me to experience that on a touring show for the first time. This will also give me valuable experience and contacts to help me within the industry."
Nicole Evans has accepted the role of shadowing the director for the production. In this role she will observe the work of director Ffion Wyn Bowen from the rehearsal process to the final performances, as well as how to take a production on tour. She said:
"I’m looking forward to gaining first-hand learning experience on directing and observing in a professional practice space and am excited to continue my development as a student here at UWTSD into the industry. I can't wait to see this magical show come to life!"
Alice Pearson will assist as Technical Support and Stage Crew on the production, and is looking forward to expanding her network, learning more about the industry, and developing her skills in a live performance environment:
"I'm particularly looking forward to working alongside practitioners like Cara Hood and Eädyth Crawford. As someone who is passionate about audio and visual storytelling, the opportunity to learn from a creative and technical team led by women in a field that is often dominated by men is especially meaningful. More than anything, I'm excited for a summer of collaborating with like-minded people and helping to bring this magical story to audiences across Wales."
We are delighted to be working alongside the University of Wales Trinity Saint David on this production. Thank you and good luck to the students!
