26th-27th November 2021      *Online Event*

Ceangal | Cwlwm III is the third gathering of artists and organisations working in theatre in Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Welsh. This year’s gathering brings together theatre artists and makers, academics, students, policymakers, and funders, to create a platform for two days of panel discussions, a keynote address, the Ceangal | Cwlwm website launch and a call for digital theatrical presentations from the three nations.

This year’s gathering is hosted by the Centre for Media and Culture in Small Nations, University of South Wales in partnership with Theatre Gu Leòr and the National University of Ireland Galway, and with support from Ealaín na Gaeltachta, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, The National Eisteddfod of Wales, and Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe.

The four key objectives of the gathering are to:

  • Explore innovative approaches to making new work in these three minoritised languages.
  • Interrogate and share models of best practice.
  • Agree on common guiding principles for the theatre sectors working in Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Welsh that nurture respect, linguistic diversity and equality.
  • Continue to commission theatre makers to present new work in their native languages of Welsh, Irish and Scottish Gaelic.

Throughout this year’s event there will be artists’ panels, academic dialogues, and opportunities for attendees to interact with panellists and speakers. Themes include theatre and rural communities; developing new writing; working multilingually; equality, diversity and inclusion and the needs of theatre practitioners and the industry; first steps into producing and directing theatre; and the skills required for working in these minoritized languages. The event’s keynote speech will be delivered by Professor Michelle Macleod, University of Aberdeen, based on her book, Dràma na Gàidhlig: Ceud Bliadhna Air An Àrd-Ùrlar, A Century of Gaelic Drama (Glasgow, 2021). The 2021-22 Ceangal | Cwlwm Digital Theatre Commission for Artists will be opened during the gathering, and there will be opportunity to hear from previous commissioned artists on their experiences of completing this commission. The Ceangal | Cwlwm website will be launched during the event.

Previous gatherings, hosted by partners in Scotland and Ireland, developed a set of guiding principles and set a precedent for new ways of working across the three languages. There will be opportunities to read the guiding principles on the Ceangal | Cwlwm website and to feedback on them during this gathering.

The gathering will allow for simultaneous translation during panel discussions, ensuring accessibility for attendees across the spectrum of languages involved.

Ticketing for the event is free but registration on Eventbrite is essential. Go to https://culture.research.southwales.ac.uk/  for further details of the event and how to register.
