A new partnership between Theatr Gen and S4C

Three people stand in front of banners. The woman on the left has short grey hair and is wearing a blue and white dress. The man in the middle has curly brown hair and an oversized embroidered shirt. The woman on the left has long brown hair and wearing a black leather jacket and floral dress. All three are smiling.

Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and S4C are pleased to announce a new partnership to stream productions and develop Y Dyn Nath Ddwyn y ’Dolig 2.

Three Theatr Gen productions will be streamed by S4C and will be available to watch on S4C Clic in 2024. The streaming service will be a co-production between the two institutions, giving people who are unable to attend theatres access to performances and opening the arts to everyone.

The partnership will also work on the development of a sequel to the popular 1985 S4C film, Y Dyn Nath Ddwyn y ’Dolig.

Y Dyn Nath Ddwyn y ’Dolig 2 will take inspiration from the original version to create a new musical to entertain the young and old.

The original film was created by Caryl Parry Jones and Hywel Gwynfryn, and produced by Endaf Emlyn.

This comes as S4C prepares to broadcast new series Anfamol in September, based on the original production by Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru of the same name - a dark comedy drama adapted from the stage play by Rhiannon Boyle.

S4C is also looking to develop other television adaptations of Theatr Gen's productions in future.

Steffan Donnelly, our Artistic Director, said:
“This exciting partnership shows two national companies working together innovatively. As well as developing a new musical, the partnership will expand access to our productions, showcase great Welsh artists, increase value for money, and offer audiences the opportunity to rewatch some of their favourite productions. Our mission is to tour our performances as close to people’s doorsteps as possible. This is an opportunity to go beyond that, taking theatre directly into people’s living rooms!"

Sian Doyle S4C Chief Executive said:

“Y Dyn Nath Ddwyn y ’Dolig is one of S4C’s all-time classics. I’m so excited to be working with Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru on this project. The partnership’s aim is to bring the best theatre productions to people's screens wherever they are and attract a new audience. This will allow people to get a taste of the great work that Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru is doing up and down the country."

Our partnership with S4C was launched at the National Eisteddfod on 8 August 2023.
