Wrecslam! Announcing the Playwrights and Cast

Wrecslam Title Treatment

Theatr Cymru and Theatr Clwyd are delighted to announce the exceptional writing and acting talent behind their latest co-production, Wrecslam!, which will be performed at the Wrexham National Eisteddfod this August.

Following a national call-out, the four successful playwrights are: Llyr Evans, Mirain Fflur, Llinos Gerallt and Mel Owen. Now embarking on a programme of dramaturgical workshops and masterclasses, the playwrights will develop their ideas into four short plays – each themed around Wrexham itself – to be performed at Caffi Maes B at this year’s National Eisteddfod. Gruffydd Ywain – one of last year’s Ha/Ha playwrights – returns with a prologue and epilogue to bring the four short plays together.

Directed by Theatr Cymru’s Rhian Blythe and Theatr Clwyd’s Daniel Lloyd, the companies have assembled an exciting ensemble of talent from North-East Wales to bring the plays to the Eisteddfod stage. Alongside composer and musical director Barnaby Southgate, Wrecslam! will feature performances from Isabella Colby Browne (Cymrix, Gwlad! Gwlad!), Noel Davies (Rownd a Rownd), Caitlin Drake (Branwen: Dadeni) and Dewi Wykes (Petula, The Famous Five Musical). Set and costumes will be designed by Livia Jones, with Jess Williams joining the team as movement director.

Wrecslam! continues a long-term partnership between Theatr Cymru and Theatr Clwyd, aiming to develop and produce new Welsh-language shorts. The companies previously collaborated on living newspaper Rwan/Nawr at the 2023 National Eisteddfod, followed by last year’s Ha/Ha at the 2024 festival.

Theatr Cymru’s Artistic Director, Steffan Donnelly, is delighted to continue this partnership with Theatr Clwyd to offer new development opportunities for Welsh-language theatre writers:

“There’s a wealth of new writing talent in Wales and Wrecslam! will bring five brilliant writers’ ideas to the buzzing festival atmosphere of the National Eisteddfod. Generating new work in Welsh is a priority for Theatr Cymru and Theatr Clwyd and we’re looking forward to collaborating for the third year running on this new writing model. I’m looking forward to seeing the wonderful cast and creative team create an inventive and inspirational night of new work in Wrexham.”

With the National Eisteddfod on their doorstep this year, Theatr Clwyd is also delighted to present this co-production. Kate Wasserberg, Theatr Clwyd’s Artistic Director, said:

“It’s incredibly exciting to welcome the National Eisteddfod to Wrexham and to be part of the celebration with our co-production with Theatr Cymru, Wrecslam! – a project rooted in our community and culture. We’re especially proud to see such a talented cast and writers — many from North-East Wales — bringing these new plays to life. Supporting Welsh artists at every stage of their careers is central to our mission, and this partnership is a powerful example of what can happen when theatres come together to serve and inspire the community we’re part of.”

Catch Wrecslam! in Caffi Maes B at 6pm on 4 – 7 August 2025 (Mon – Thu). Entry is free with a ticket to the Maes.
