Huw Fyw Playtext: Available Now
With the second tour of Tudur Owen's first stage play, Huw Fyw, about to begin, the script for the play is being published by Gwasg Carreg Gwalch.
Huw Fyw was published on 10 April 2026, and in addition to the full stage script, the playtext includes:
- Foreword by Tudur Owen
- Introduction by Steffan Donnelly, Artistic Director of Theatr Cymru
- Glossary to support new speakers to discuss the play
- Educational resources for teachers and lecturers to support GCSE, A Level and college students
Theatre is an artform best enjoyed via live performance, but Tudur Owen was keen that the script was recorded in print. "Huw Fyw's journey started on the page," he said, "and I didn't want that journey to end. This opportunity offers a second life for the story as a piece of writing that stands on its own two feet."
But who is Huw Fyw? "It was at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2022 that he first came on the scene," explains Tudur, "in my stand-up comedy show ALIVE HUW. The idea for the character came from some advice I heard from a veteran soldier: "Never try your time. Remember that – one day it might save your life.” He wholeheartedly believed that he had survived the Second World War by sticking to this piece of wisdom. I'm not sure if it was true or not, but I've treasured this rebellious and mischievous advice ever since. I developed the character from there."
Steffan Donnelly said:
"When I met Tudur Owen in 2022 and asked if he wanted to write for the theatre, he started talking enthusiastically about this complex character that immediately caught my attention. That was my first introduction to Huw Fyw – a character who now feels like a true friend.
As we embark on a new tour for this hugely popular play, I'm delighted that this wonderful script by Tudur has now been published and is available for our audiences to buy and enjoy at home. Not only will this book extend the life of the production but it also offers valuable educational material to explore, analyse and relive the play long after the theatrical tour has ended."
Since the premiere of the play in May 2025, Huw Fyw has captured the attention of audiences across Wales. Now, everyone can take Huw home with them.
The book will be on sale in bookshops across Wales, on Ffolio.cymru and on the Gwasg Carreg Gwalch website from 10 April 2026. Copies will also be on sale via local booksellers at some of the venues during the Wales-wide tour, which begins on 15 April 2026.
