Theatr Cymru is thrilled to announce Te Angladd by Gruffudd Owen, a new sequel to hit comedy play Parti Priodas. Presented with support from Galeri Caernarfon, this new play will open in Galeri before touring Wales in spring 2027, bringing back the much-loved characters, witty writing and universal themes that entertained Welsh audiences in 2024.
Alongside this new play, Theatr Cymru is delighted to announced that Parti Priodas – which won a UK Theatre Award for Excellence in Touring in 2024 – is embarking on a limited international tour this year, with performances at the London Welsh Centre on 27 and 28 August and at the North American Festival of Wales at the beginning of September. It will be the first full Welsh language performance programmed as the headline event at this special festival in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The original cast – Mared Llywelyn and Mark Henry-Davies – return to the roles of Lowri and Idris (and other memorable characters) for the return of Parti Priodas and the new production Te Angladd.
Playwright Gruffudd Owen said:
“I’m chuffed to bits that Lowri, Idris and the whole cast of characters in Parti Priodas get to go on a trip to London and America. Let’s hope they all behave...!
When Parti Priodas was touring Wales during spring 2024, someone asked me if I planned to write a sequel to the play. I hadn’t, but the question planted a seed. I soon realised that I had more to say about Lowri and Idris, and about their complicated relationship with their community, their Welshness and each other.
I’m delighted to be working with Theatr Cymru again and that Mared and Mark have returned to play Lowri and Idris... and everyone else! Te Angladd is a warm, witty and heart-wrenching comedy play located in Pen Llŷn and Cardiff. Don’t miss out – this will be a funeral to remember!”
Steffan Donnelly, Theatr Cymru’s Artistic Director, said:
"Sometimes characters move you and you feel there may be more to say about their story. That's how I felt after touring Parti Priodas back in 2024 and so I'm delighted that we're returning to Gruffudd’s brilliant writing and the characters Lowri and Idris, with the same cast, in a brand-new play - Te Angladd.
It’s crucial that Theatr Cymru continues to nurture and develop new Welsh language work – not only to provide a platform for contemporary voices and explore our world, but also to create opportunities for artists to grow and challenge themselves. As we did with Parti Priodas, this tour is a fantastic opportunity to bring a theatre production to as wide an audience as possible, travelling to the heart of communities across Wales.
Following the success of Romeo a Juliet at Shakespeare's Globe last year, we're delighted to be returning to London with Parti Priodas and our first performances at the London Welsh Centre. I'm also extremely proud of the opportunity to build on our recent international work by taking one of our productions to the North American Festival of Wales for the first time ever."
Originally performed at the 2023 Llŷn and Eifionydd National Eisteddfod before touring Wales in 2024, Parti Priodas captures the joy, tension and chaos of the guests at a wedding in Pen Llŷn in a laugh-out-loud comedy play. Te Angladd returns to the main characters Lowri and Idris, following their lives after the events of the first play.
