Departures_ThGC_Macbeth_Castle_1200x800

Four years after the original performances at Caerphilly Castle in February 2017, we are delighted to release our award-winning production of Macbeth as part of the Theatr Gen Eto programme for 2021.

With a new translation of Shakespeare’s classic by the late Gwyn Thomas and a cast including Richard Lynch, Ffion Dafis, Llion Williams and Phylip Harries, together with a community cast, Macbeth provided an opportunity to see Caerphilly’s splendid castle in a way in which it had never been seen before. The production was also broadcast live to cinemas throughout Wales at the time.

Now this production of Macbeth will be available to view online completely free of charge, with closed captions in both English and Welsh available.

“Cyfieithiad gwefreiddiol o un o glasuron byd theatr.”
Golwg
“The best production of Macbeth I have seen in any language.”
Arts Scene in Wales
“A cold and spooky medieval castle is possibly the best location for a production of Shakespeare’s brutal tragedy Macbeth.”
Daily Post

Arwel Gruffydd, our Artistic Director and director of the production, said:

“Not everybody was able to come to Caerphilly Castle four years ago, but by way of Theatr Gen Eto we’ll be taking that magnificent medieval castle to every part of Wales, and bringing this site-specific production of Macbeth to audiences around the world to enjoy in the comfort of their own homes.”

Macbeth will be available to watch from 7pm on Wednesday 27 January 2021 on our YouTube channel and on AM, which is launching the latest version of the platform on the same day. The production will be available to watch for 6 months, and permanently available on our website as an educational resource for schools, colleges and universities.

Theatr Gen Eto is part of a new programme of work launched by us at Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru in response to the Coronavirus crisis. It provides an opportunity for audiences to enjoy past productions on screen whilst theatres in Wales and beyond are closed. Over the coming months, more of our productions will be released from the archive.
