Nos Sadwrn o Hyd
Following a messy break-up sound-tracked by Take That, Lee goes looking for love and finds it. For a short while life is sweet, but after every Saturday night dawns the harsh reality of Sunday morning and, as Lee discovers, nothing lasts forever.
I wrote the drama originally in English entitled Saturday Night Forever. The main character wishes Saturday night would last forever, the title is also the name of a Pet Shop Boys song. The play was performed in Wales and Edinburgh in 1998 ac it’s been performed numerous times over the past few years. I had to go back to it to revamp the text for the production by the Aberystwyth Arts Centre in 2016. So much had changed in our society in terms of attitudes and technology etc and these changes needed to be included in the play in order to keep it current. The script was adapted to Welsh last year for the National Eisteddfod.
Lee is a man in his 20s who lives in Cardiff. He’s looking for love; he’s a funny and likeable character. It is important that the audience takes to the character so that the ending has an impact.
Each actor will play Lee in his own style. I welcome all interpretations – this is what makes theatre interesting in my opinion. Unlike television and film we have the opportunity to re-imagine all productions and each performance even. Sion and Aled will interpret my words in their special way and according to their personal experiences.
I will not be spending time in the rehearsal room this time around as the drama has been performed a number of times over the years. I enjoy going to watch the shows these days and discover what the creative team has created.
There is a need to work in a different way according to the medium of the work. It is an exciting time to be writing for television at the moment. The industry is evolving and taking risks in several ways. Television is my favourite medium at the moment but I’m also preparing a film for the first time this year and writing a stage play for the first time in several years.
