I was thrillled when Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru got in touch to ask if I’d like to light their latest production, Hollti, for them. The last time I lit a show for the company was Chwalfa last year at Pontio. This will also be the second verbatim show I’ve lit for the company, Sgint being the other a few years back.
Theatr Gen has always been a great company to work with, and so on the first day of rehearsals a fortnight ago, I was excited to see so many lovely people again and to meet so many new ones too.
The first stage of lighting design is very much involved with coming up with ideas that tie into the same language as that of the director and designer, as well as the sound designer and AV designer. Consequently, we have been in discussions for a while now and I’m busy mulling over ideas whilst also taking into consideration the practicalities of the venue we open the show in.
I have also moved house during the past week, and today I’ve been able to think of ideas for the show whilst stripping wallpaper – a much better way of getting rid of the paper than usual! A note to the previous owners, though – why, oh why, did you choose wallpaper with glitter in it? It gets into everything!!
