Over the years, the Richard Burton Award has provided some of Wales’ leading performers to gain stage experience. The competition is among the Eisteddfod’s most popular competitions, and the intention this year is to provide guidance for those considering competing in the Anglesey Eisteddfod.
Two masterclasses will be held on 1 April, one at Theatr Genedlaethol’s base at Y Llwyfan, Carmarthen and the other at Pontio, Bangor, and according to Carys Edwards, Chair of the Eisteddfod’s Drama Committee, “These courses will be invaluable for anyone wishing to pursue a career on the stage in the future. It’s a great opportunity for young performers to work with two experienced practitioners, Steffan Donelly and Aled Pedrick. I hope that the masterclass element of the day will be beneficial, and that the performers will feel that it’s a great opportunity to learn new skills, including using their voice and posture, movement on stage and communicating with the audience.
“The Richard Burton Award is an important and popular part of the Eisteddfod, and we hope this will help to attract even more competitors. The day will also be relevant for anyone wanting to develop their performance skills in preparation for auditions at colleges over the coming months.
“This is the first time we’ve arranged a day like this, and we are very grateful to Cwmni Drama Cymraeg Llanelli for their generous support to enable us to hold both events. We are also grateful to Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and Pontio for their support, and are sure that the two masterclasses will be a great success.”
Spaces for the courses are very limited – there is only room for fifteen on both courses, and places will be offered on a first come basis. Anyone interested should contact firstname.lastname@example.org before 15 March.
Remember that the closing date for the Eisteddfod’s stage competitions is 1 May and anyone interested can register online at www.eisteddfod.wales. The Anglesey National Eisteddfod is held at Bodedern from 4-12 August. For more information go online.
