Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, in association with Galeri Caernarfon, are pleased to announce a new production that will be premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe before embarking on a tour of Wales later this year.
Dawns Ysbrydion (Ghost Dance) will be performed during the last week of August in Zoo Southside in Edinburgh before opening a tour of Wales at Galeri Caernarfon in November.
A story of endangered cultures, told 50 years since the drowning of a North Welsh village to create the Tryweryn reservoir to support the expanding population of Liverpool. Taking inspiration from the Ghost Dances performed by some of the North American First Nations at the end of the nineteenth century, internationally acclaimed performer Eddie Ladd leads an all-female cast which also includes Anna ap Robert and Angharad Price Jones. The piece will be co-directed by Eddie Ladd and Montreal choreographer Sarah Williams, with live, original electro score by Y Pencadlys.
Eddie Ladd said of the production;
“The Ghost Dance movement grew quickly and unexpectedly amongst the First Nations tribes of North America at the end of the 19th century. It’s a dance which is created from a crisis, and in my opinion, there’s a similar crisis facing us today. The aim of the dancers was to gain a vision of a new life, and visit that “new life” for a short while.
To some extent, the Tryweryn campaign was also a ghost dance, particularly the direct action of Emyr Llew, Owain Williams and John Albert Jones. Emyr Llew mentioned that a country must have a dream, and by the end of the show, we hope to be able to declare a standing for dreaming, imagining, surviving and implementing.”
Dawns Ysbrydion will be staged from the 24th – 29th of August at Zoo Southside, Edinburgh at 10:40am. The tour of Wales will open on the 8th of November in Galeri Caernarfon with the rest of the tour being announced in May.
