Alongside our co-producers Theatr Iolo we are delighted to announce that we will be touring Llygoden yr Eira this Christmas in a first partnership between the two companies. This is a new Welsh-language adaptation of the sell-out children’s show, Snow Mouse, originally created by the egg and Travelling Light.
Llygoden yr Eira is an enchanting winter’s tale for the very young. Filled with play, puppetry and music, the show follows a child as he finds a little mouse fast asleep under the snow in a magical forest. Sliding, tumbling and laughing, the two new friends explore the winter wonderland together. Featuring delightful characters and visual storytelling, this Welsh-language show is a festive family treat for both Welsh speakers and learners alike.
Arwel Gruffydd, Artistic Director of Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, said: “We’re pleased to be working with Theatr Iolo on this delightful show for very young children and their families. We’re equally delighted to be taking the production to small venues up and down the country in the run-up to Christmas. The show – which is set in a magical winter wonderland – is a unique and engaging theatre experience. It provides an opportunity for language and play in an accessible atmosphere, and relaxed performances will be offered at every venue.”
Following on from his recent successes of Christmas Carol at the Bristol Old Vic and the Unicorn Production in association with the Polar Bears, The Polar Bears, Go Go Go, Lee Lyford, Artistic Director of Theatr Iolo, will be directing Llygoden yr Eira. “It’s great to be collaborating with the inspiring Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru for the first time. We can’t wait to share this gorgeous tale reimagined in the Welsh language with communities and venues across Wales.”
Ffion Wyn Bowen is the Associate Director for Llygoden yr Eira. An experienced director and actress in productions for children and young people, Ffion’s role on this production is supported by Awenau, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru’s director development scheme, sponsored by the Elinor Wyn Roberts and Graham Laker memorial funds.
With five performances scheduled to be presented at The Grand, Swansea, the production is presented with support from the Welsh Drama Society, Swansea, as part of their centenary celebrations. A representative of the society said: “As part of our centenary celebrations this year, we’re delighted to sponsor this production as part of our continued aim to support Welsh-language theatre in the Swansea area and beyond.”
The tour will visit venues across Wales during November and December 2019. See below for a full list of the tour dates. We will also be celebrating the show with a party and puppet-making workshop for young children at the Conwy County National Eisteddfod on 7 August 2019 at 1.30pm in Caffi’r Theatrau.
